OSHA announced in a News Release that they are changing inspection guidelines for in-patient healthcare facilities. OSHA now recommends that hospital and residential care staff review hazards relating to musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) as they relate to patient or resident handling, as well as bloodborne pathogens, workplace violence, tuberculosis, and slips, trips, and falls when conducting any inspections. The goal is to ensure that employers are taking an active role in maintaining safe workplaces through enforcing these additional standards ( OSHA’s News Release, 6/23/15).

OSHA has also offered new resource materials and inspection guidance to help healthcare facilities protect their employees from work-related injuries. “Nursing homes and personal care facilities continue to have one of the highest rates of injury and illness among industries for which lost workday injury and illness (LWDII) rates are calculated” ( OSHA’s memorandum, 6/25/15).

Succeed Management Solutions, LLC offers the Aging Services Rx® Risk Management Center to assist long-term care facilities with maintaining OSHA compliance. The web-based software platform offers training courses on patient & resident handling, bloodborne pathogens, and many other Continuing Education certified training courses. Aging Services Rx also provides access to best practice policies and procedures and in-service training materials for long-term care professionals and staff, plus regular live webinars on a variety of relevant resident care and employee development topics. The Aging Services Rx platform was designed to help long-term care facilities manage risk and implement workplace safety.
