Survey by AdvancedMD Finds 67% of Medical Groups Employ a Behavioral Health Specialist

EMR Industry

An AdvancedMD survey of medical group owners and staff found that nearly 60% have adopted telehealth tools to enhance their mental health services.

South Jordan, Utah, September 24, 2025 – AdvancedMD, a provider of cloud-based healthcare software for independent medical practices, today published results from its survey exploring the intersection of healthcare technology and behavioral health services. The survey, which included over 200 medical group owners and staff, revealed that 67% of respondents reported employing at least one mental health specialist in their practice. Another 15% indicated that, although they do not have a mental health provider on staff, they do screen patients for mental health concerns.

Mental Health America’s 2024 State of Mental Health in America report found that nearly 25% of U.S. adults experienced a mental illness in 2023. Among children aged 12 to 17, one in five had at least one major depressive episode during the same year, yet fewer than half received any mental health treatment. Additionally, more than 122 million Americans live in areas with a shortage of mental health professionals.

The survey underscores a growing trend in ambulatory care, with more providers integrating behavioral health services into their practices. When asked about the technology solutions supporting these services, 58% of respondents cited telehealth platforms—more than twice the proportion reporting use of digital screening and assessment tools.

“Our survey results highlight a critical shift in healthcare, with providers actively seeking new ways to meet their patients’ mental health needs. At AdvancedMD, we focus on delivering unified solutions that can be tailored to the unique requirements of each private practice, including mental health-specific offerings,” said Amanda Sharp, CEO of AdvancedMD. “Our telehealth platforms, customizable workflows, and medical billing solutions are designed to support behavioral healthcare, enabling practices to provide a more comprehensive patient experience. Telehealth, in particular, offers convenience and flexibility while expanding access to mental health services in rural areas where specialists may be limited.”

The survey also found that nearly 70% of respondents report patients request telehealth appointments for mental health services on a weekly or daily basis, with 38% receiving such requests on a daily basis.

Additionally, AdvancedMD discovered that healthcare technology is playing a key role in improving mental health outcomes. Over 60% of survey participants rated their practice’s digital tools as either “very effective” or “somewhat effective” in identifying and supporting patients’ mental health needs.
