U.S. State Department posts RFI for commercial EHR

The department’s Office of Medical Services is soliciting information about a commercial off-the-shelf electronic health record system to be installed at diplomatic missions.

The U.S. Department of State’s Office of Medical Services has posted a request for information for a commercial, off-the-shelf ambulatory electronic health record system.

The EHR would be deployed at U.S. diplomatic missions worldwide.

“The purpose of this RFI is to gain knowledge of the interest, capabilities and qualifications from the industry that can be used to satisfy the Project Management Support Services requirements,” the State Department explained in the RFI posted on FedBizOpps.Gov. “It is not to be construed as a commitment by the Department of State. It does not constitute a Request for Proposal or promise to issue an RFP in the future.”

This is not the first time the State Department has solicited information regarding a commercial EHR, either. The agency posted a similar request for information regarding a commercial EHR back in December of 2010 to be deployed at U.S consulates and embassies in 170 countries.

Meanwhile the U.S. Department of Defense intends to roll out the initial phase of its Cerner EHR in the Pacific Northwest this December.

But the Office of Inspector General has questioned whether the DoD will be ready in time for a December rollout of this first stage of the project, asserting there are “potential delays involved in developing and testing the interfaces needed to interact with legacy systems.”

Likewise, the Department of State is not expected to make a quick decision.
