Understanding Life Insurance During the Coronavirus Pandemic

Understanding Life Insurance During the Coronavirus Pandemic

The coronavirus pandemic has triggered numerous changes in the United States. Businesses are changing the way that they operate. Citizens are being asked to only go out for essential errands. More and more people are working from home.

All of these changes have prompted some confusion and a lot of fear. A major concern for many adults is whether or not their life insurance policies will cover their families should they die from the virus or if their policies will be affected. Here’s what you need to know.

Can You Apply for Life Insurance During the Pandemic?

You can still apply for a life insurance policy during the pandemic. Keep in mind that different companies have different rules. Some have temporarily suspended applications while others are placing restrictions on applicants who have recently traveled to high-risk areas. Others are still taking applications as normal. Before you begin the process, be sure that you know what (if any) changes have been made.

Are Insurers Still Doing Medical Exams?

Most insurers are still performing medical exams for life insurance applicants. Some companies have even extended the amount of time you have to get yours completed. There are also some companies that are waiving the exam and accepting a statement from your physician with your latest health records.

For those companies requiring a medical exam, extra precautions are being taken. Rigorous safety procedures are being put into place to protect you and the person performing your exam. For instance, if you are feeling ill, you will likely be asked to reschedule after 14 days.

Is Life Insurance More Expensive Because of Coronavirus?

Whether you go through AIG, Pacific Life, or Fabric Life Insurance, premiums are not likely to be more expensive. Keep in mind, however, that what you pay each month is based on your risk factors, and a pandemic like the one we are currently experiencing is a risk. Developing an illness during the application process could cause your final premiums to be higher as well.

Can I Get Life Insurance if I Contract Coronavirus?

If you currently have the coronavirus, you may want to put your application on hold until after you have recovered, even if your symptoms are mild. During the application, an insurance company will ask you about your health history, including if you are currently ill. Some are even specifically asking if you have been treated for the virus.

Will My Policy Cover Death from COVID-19?

If you already have a life insurance policy, your family will be covered should you die from COVID-19. Pandemic and epidemic-related deaths are not exempt. So long as your policy is active and you’re making your payments, your beneficiaries will receive the payout.

Will My Premiums Increase?

For those who currently have an active life insurance policy, your premiums will not increase due to the coronavirus pandemic. The premiums you were quoted when you first applied are what you will continue to pay throughout the life of your policy.

What if I Can’t Pay My Premiums?

Millions of Americans have lost their jobs as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. If you are experiencing a coronavirus-related financial hardship, contact your life insurance company right away.

In normal situations, your policy would be voided if you failed to make payments. These are not normal times. Insurance companies typically have a 30-day grace period. During the pandemic, many companies are extending their grace periods in an effort to help those impacted. Your insurance provider can provide you with their specific policies when it comes to a pandemic-related hardship.

A life insurance policy is a vital financial investment designed to help protect your family in the event of your unexpected death. If you currently have a policy, you are protected during the pandemic. If you don’t yet have one, you can still apply. Just keep in mind that there may be some additional restrictions and it may take longer to complete the process.
