Why Compound Medicine Is the Way of the Future

Why Compound Medicine Is the Way of the Future

One of the key differences between the present and the past is the fact that now we have options when it comes to almost everything. In the food and beverage industry, there are food substitutes and alternatives to fit all dietary preferences. When it comes to fashion, there is a dizzyingly wide array of styles and designs.

Entertainment, transportation, housing- all are tailored to their various consumer groups. Similarly, the way to the future of healthcare is through personalization. That is where compound medicine makes its biggest contribution yet. If you are not familiar with the term, compound medicine is the science of combining or altering medications to cater to an individual’s specific need. Here is why this can change our future.

It Removes Limitations on Medications

Allergies are quite common in this day and age. While the solution is often as simple as avoiding the substance, this can get tricky when it comes to medicine, especially when the substance happens to be an ingredient in the needed medication. The process of compounding different aspects of medicine allows a company or a lab to manufacture the same result, but with a substitute for the allergen. The process also helps when it comes to people who require liquid medicine in place of pills or those who need a highly concentrated medication dosage that commercial companies aren’t allowed to produce.

It is Key to Genetically-specific Medication

Pharmacogenomics is the study of how the differences in genes affect drug metabolization, and in turn, the potency of said pharmaceutical drugs. In the future, it is expected that the field will reach a level of advancement where a drug can be tailored specifically based on an individual’s needs and genetic structure. What is happening in the field of compound medicine is quite interesting, because according to My Village Green, labs and apothecaries have already started combining medications in order to cater to the people in need. As for the compound medicine manufacturing process, it is based on lab tests, medical history, and patient requirements which guarantees a high level of medication potency and a promising future when the field of pharmacogenomics hits its stride.

It Overrides Side Effects

Our bodies are highly complex. When you take a drug intended for a specific organ to combat a specific disease, other organs are bound to get affected since most drugs have to go through your body. While a drug can be good for one organ, side effects are always a risk because the same drug might negatively impact another organ. With compounding, a simple change in the way one medicine is administered can completely eliminate side effects. For example, if an allergy pill causes nausea, an alternative can be made in the form of an ointment. Picture the worst side effects eliminated and you’ll realize that the future is one step closer already.

As you can see, the field of compound medicine is more than capable, to the extent that it is currently waiting for the technological and clinical advancements in other fields. Once more, information is available on genomes and cancer treatments, the field of compound medicine will adapt by offering its own range of tailored solutions. Not only that, but the level of customization offered by compound medicine has promising potential when it comes to disease prevention.
