Wondering When to See a Nutritionist Instead of Your Doctor? Here’s How You’ll Know.

Having access to medical care is something you should never take for granted because doctors can do really wonderful things. They’re there to help you when you’re sick, diagnose and create plans to manage health conditions and they’re even there to help you through a rough patch or two in life. However, what your doctor is offering isn’t always going to completely cover what you’re truly in search of. Luckily, there are other specialists who also work hard to make sure your needs are met. A common crossroads in a doctor-patient relationship is when a patient is in need of guidance or development in a plan to meet their nutritional needs, whatever the reason may be. As you probably know, a nutritionist is someone who specializes solely in nutrition and everything it touches. That’s a lot. And for some people, that’s exactly what they need. Keep reading for three scenarios when seeing a nutritionist might be more beneficial to your overall health and well-being than making a trip to the doctor.

1. When You’re Trying to Lose Weight

It’s no surprise that losing weight can be an uphill battle. It takes time and dedication and it can be really tricky to understand nutrition and food and how it all works together with your body. That can lead to frustration, a common reason so many people have difficulties reaching their weight loss goals. Working with a nutritionist can give you an advantage. Everything from understanding your metabolism, how certain foods work for or against your body to simply gaining a better understanding of how it all works will all prove to be very valuable in your journey.

If you’re currently following a weight loss supplementation program, your nutritionist should be able to work with you to incorporate it into your daily routine. Working with a program that’s packed with natural vitamins, minerals and powerhouse amino acids is a great way to ensure your body is being treated nicely, as it should be. Research is important and learning about the Thrive Experience could prove to be beneficial.

2. When You’re Experiencing Food Allergies

Food allergies can be incredibly frustrating, painful and difficult to diagnose and live with. Trying to figure it all out on your own can be very tricky and lead to more dead ends than you’d like. Visiting a nutritionist for your allergies could help you get to the root of your unpleasant experiences with certain foods or ingredients, ultimately steering you in the right direction. That’s not to say the process will be a quick one — there are several steps involved, such as allergy tests and elimination diets that take time. Rest assured it will be worth it.

3. When You’re Recovering From an Eating Disorder

When it comes to eating disorders, there is no one-size-fits-all approach. However, visiting a nutritionist will likely be a part of the recovery plan. What can you expect? The process may be more involved than you’d expect, but that is ultimately a good thing. You can expect it to be comprehensive, educational and tailored just for your specific needs. Having a nutritionist in your corner will provide the support and guidance you need to get on the road to recovery.

Finding your way to a nutritionist might seem intimidating at first. Maybe you don’t think it’s necessary or that they can’t do anything your doctor can. Remember, while doctors are great — connecting with someone who specializes in food and nutrition will serve you well, especially when you have very specific reasons. This can also be more convenient than working around your doctor’s busy schedule. While it might seem like just another appointment you have to make and keep (and you’re already busy enough), don’t let that stop you. Chances are you’ll wonder why you didn’t make the call sooner.
