5 Ways to Improve Your Hospital’s Efficiency

When running a hospital, there are many moving parts and just as many red-tape hurdles. Keeping your facility running smoothly requires a great deal of dedication, perseverance, and knowledge. Even the best-run hospitals still need to tighten up the slack from time to time. Here are just a few tips for improving the efficiency of your hospital.

1. Reduce Overtreatment

Sometimes doctors prescribe excessive treatment for patients. These situations are not necessarily an intentional waste of resources, but premature surgery and antibiotics prescribed for viral infections are common sources of waste in a hospital. This type of overtreatment can save a significant amount of hospital resources over the course of a year. It also saves patients a sizable bill when a little extra time and more careful consideration can bring their doctor to a much more practical solution. While identifying the problems in hindsight is easy, the only preventative measure is a solid information campaign to better educate doctors and staff about best possible practices.

2. Improve Accessibility of Patient Data

Another common source of inefficiency in the hospital lies in the flow of information. From the reports of first responders bringing patients into the emergency room to one-on-one conversations between walk-in patients and the nursing staff, all patient data has to be handled with care. When it comes to making accurate diagnoses and prescribing the right medications, though, that information needs to not only be secure but readily accessible to the right people. To keep patient data readily available to the doctors and nursing staff when they need it most, your hospital needs to invest in modern technological solutions like ePCR communications systems to store and share relevant patient data throughout your hospital’s internal network.

3. Streamline Administration

Keeping up with a convoluted hierarchy and redundant administrative processes only leads to a breakdown in communications. Nursing staff and doctors have their hands full with the patients, so your administration system needs to work smoothly and serve to support your staff. High salary costs for a multi-tier administration system that does not provide better quality patient care is just another example of both financial loss and inefficiency. By trimming the fat by cutting unnecessary redundancies in credentialing and contract systems for vendors and health plan agencies will free up doctors to provide more immediate care and cut operational costs.

4. Push Individual Accountability

Having a staff of doctors, nurses, and administrators who all embrace the value of their personal responsibility can vastly improve your hospital’s efficiency. While this quality is not one that can always be taught on the job, it can be reinforced and nurtured. Cultivating a culture of safety and emphasizing the value that each team member brings to the hospital are just a couple of the ways you can encourage your employees. The better their attitudes and the more they feel personally valued, the more individual accountability you will see in the workforce.

5. Implement Time Management Training

Time management skills are essential when working in healthcare. Your hospital staff needs to be well trained on how to best manage their time on the clock. Time management training is a good way to help foster teamwork by helping staff members learn how best to prioritize their daily tasks and successfully shift gears when medical emergencies arise. Using your time wisely always improves the outcome, so time management skills in a healthcare setting improve the quality of patient care and reduce the potential for additional expenses caused by the mismanagement of patients.

Keeping all of the moving parts of a hospital on track is a challenge on the best of days. Much like a machine, each part needs special attention to make sure the path is clear and the components are in top shape. Following these suggestions may not make running a hospital any less of a challenge, but it will help to keep some of the key problem areas in perspective.
