Advancing AI in Australia’s Healthcare Sector

The rapid progress of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies underscores the urgency of ensuring that Australia’s digital healthcare sector is adeq (AI) uately prepared to lead the adoption of AI in a safe and effective manner.

This AI revolution is already reshaping various aspects of healthcare delivery, from screening and diagnosis to personalized treatments, raising significant ethical, safety, and workforce challenges.

As the primary authority in digital health across Australasia, the Australasian Institute of Digital Health (AIDH) has set forth an ambitious agenda for 2024 to advance the responsible integration of AI into healthcare.

During our strategic planning session in February, it was unanimously agreed that AI should be a central focus for this year, with AIDH undertaking robust initiatives to advocate for the responsible use of AI, including fostering collaborations with key stakeholders.

There are compelling reasons why more must be done to propel AI in healthcare in Australia, with both health-related and financial benefits being paramount. Despite being a developed nation, Australia has yet to provide cohesive support for the healthcare AI sector.

This is despite the tangible healthcare benefits, such as potential reductions in national health spending and improvements in Australians’ quality of life, by enhancing the long-term safety and efficacy of the healthcare system. Evaluations of other healthcare systems, like the English National Health Service (NHS), have demonstrated substantial productivity gains achievable through AI utilization.

The limited integration of AI into Australian healthcare can be attributed to an underprepared ecosystem.

Supporting the Implementation of the Roadmap
A pivotal initiative for advancing AI in Australia is the release of the National Policy Roadmap for Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare. Enrico Coiera, the founder of the Australian Alliance for Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare (AAAiH), unveiled this roadmap at the AIDH’s AI.Care conference in Melbourne in November 2023.

AIDH, a central player in the alliance, has made significant contributions to the roadmap’s development and is committed to advancing its recommendations. This roadmap serves as a framework for the digital health community, industry stakeholders, and governmental bodies to establish guidelines for the ethical and effective implementation of AI in healthcare.

The roadmap identifies gaps in Australia’s capacity to translate AI into clinical services effectively and safely, outlining steps to enhance industry capabilities, support implementation, improve regulatory frameworks, and address these gaps comprehensively.

AIDH will actively support the roadmap’s implementation through initiatives focused on workforce development, community engagement, and policy advocacy, leveraging its authority in digital health.

Despite several regulatory and governmental bodies overseeing aspects of AI, the roadmap underscores the need for a coordinated, system-wide approach to optimize patient safety, healthcare workforce, and foster a thriving AI industry.

A Critical Frontier for Healthcare AI
A critical frontier for the healthcare AI industry is accessing expertise, technologies, curated data, and resources to develop scalable AI systems that enhance patient care. Existing capability gaps hinder the successful integration of AI advancements into frontline healthcare services.

Furthermore, the implementation and scalability of AI in healthcare are constrained by care delivery complexities and a shortage of AI-literate workforce. Successful AI adoption typically involves collaboration among developers, clinical experts, and healthcare providers to address safety and ethics challenges, ensure access to IP and high-quality data, and mitigate risks effectively.

Preparing the Healthcare Sector for AI
AI has been a central theme at recent digital health conferences, providing foundational understanding of its opportunities and challenges.

AIDH’s inaugural AI.Care conference aimed to advance the dialogue on safe AI implementation, fostering collaboration between AI experts, industry stakeholders, and facilitating knowledge exchange. Continued partnerships are essential for accessing talent and capabilities swiftly, accelerating problem-solving, service improvement, and scalability.

Many AIDH members possess extensive AI experience, offering valuable expertise for forging partnerships and advancing roadmap goals.

AIDH plays a crucial role in delivering national digital health workforce initiatives, aligning with national strategies to prepare the healthcare workforce for digital technology integration, including AI.

The launch of the Digital Health Hub supports professionals in advancing their digital health capabilities, including AI readiness.
