ChartSpan Medical Technologies Raises $1.7 M

merck global health innovation

South Carolina mobile health startupChartSpan Medical Technologies today said it has raised $1.7 million, bringing the total amount of capital raised to $3 million.

The startup has developed a mobile patient medical record for iOS that seeks to help patients better manage their own health information. Last December, the company said its application was the most downloaded iPhone and iPad app. An Android version is forthcoming, within about a week, the company said.

The recent investment was led by healthcare industry executive and investor Don Byrne, who started Byrne Medical in 1997, focusing on the GI endoscopy space. Byrne Medical was later acquired by Minntech.

ChartSpan’s app allows users to import an EHR from any source, or take a picture of the record and convert that into a digital and mobile version. It then extracts the data and populates a user’s electronic and personal database.

The efforts are, in essence, a mobile attempt at interoperability for patients, according CEO and co-founder Jon-Michial Carter.

“At ChartSpan, we got tired of waiting and built technology that would empower patients to manage their own electronic healthcare records,” he said in a statement.

The recent investment will be put toward the engineering, distribution and marketing efforts, the company said. Last September, ChartSpan raised $1 million in seed funding, also from Byrne, shortly after launching its iOS app.
