EHR adoption is expanded to cancer at Alfred Health

With Oracle’s Oncology electronic health record (EHR) technologies, Alfred Health has expanded its Oracle Health footprint to better support cancer patient care.

Primary care and specialist clinicians at Alfred Health’s in- and out-patient facilities now get a single view of every patient’s complete medical history thanks to the transition from paper-based processes to digital data.

According to Erica Tong, chief pharmacy information officer at Alfred Health, “fully digitizing and making cancer treatment information easily available in our EHR makes guiding the overall treatment plan for patients more efficient.”

The hospital is adopting Oracle EHR to assist in connecting its patients with additional cancer clinical trial possibilities, in addition to providing record access. Clinicians can quickly determine potential therapy and patient eligibility by viewing trials directly in the EHR. If a patient is enrolled in a trial already, their information and progress are monitored and recorded in their medical record as a whole.

The implementation of order information being pushed straight from the EHR into the pharmacy management system, expedites the process of preparing treatment regimens for cancer patients and helps pharmacists work more efficiently. Additionally, barcodes are generated for every treatment, which nurses may scan to verify that the appropriate patient is receiving the specified drug at the right dose.

“This recent implementation is especially unique and special as it not only helps caregivers more effectively treat cancer patients and manage medications over time through better access to information, but it also helps them find and enroll in new, potentially life-saving therapies all within the EHR,” stated Seema Verma, executive vice president and general manager, Oracle Health and Life Sciences.

Additionally, Alfred Health collaborated with Oracle to support the national Safescript program, which is a centralized database that enables real-time transmission of prescription and dispensing information for specific high-risk medications.
