Erlanger Health System Selects Excel Medical’s BedComm™ Platform

Excel Medical (Excel), announces Tennessee-based Erlanger Health System has selected Excel’s BedComm platform to facilitate medical device data integration with the hospital’s new electronic medical record (EMR) system.

The remit from Erlanger expands a clinical partnership between the two organizations, which began in 2010 with an initial installation of Excel’s BedMasterEx and Alarm Navigator technologies. The latest BedComm order anticipates Erlanger’s deployment of a new EMR, eCHART, in 2017, which will make device connectivity essential throughout the hospital enterprise. The remit also includes additional BedMasterEx units for the health system.

“Excel’s BedMasterEx and Alarm Navigator systems have provided excellent data to help us with our alarm management process. We believe combining products with Excel’s BedComm technology, for bedside device connectivity, will enhance our upcoming EMR implementation,” said Jim Caporali, MS, CRES, SASHE, Director, Clinical Engineering, Erlanger Health System.

Excel’s Medical Device Integration solution has the ability to integrate medical device data such as vital signs, waveforms, alarms, acquired from the GE Healthcare patient monitoring system from across a hospital enterprise – including anesthesia machines, ventilators, cardiac output monitors, neurological monitors, physiological monitors, and more. Taken a step further, this translates into potentially more timely data in the EMR, more accurate data in the EMR, fewer errors, and giving time back to clinicians to care for their patients.

“An integral part of Erlanger Health System’s upcoming implementation of eCHART is the mobile and bedside device integration through Excel Medical,” said Dave Peterson, SVP, Chief Information Officer of Erlanger Health System. “Using Excel’s BedCommplatform, we’ll be able to capture vital signs, alarms, and parameter data from all of our ancillary devices, directly in the new EMR.”

Excel’s “Next-Generation Medical Device Integration” solution is comprised of 4 components:

  1. Bedside Device Integration – Automates the collection and documentation of patient vital signs and other bedside device data.
  2. Mobile Vitals Capture (MVC) – BedComm MVC improves clinical workflows and documentation, and provides clinicians timely access to patients’ current vital signs. Erlanger will use Excel’s BedComm MVC combined with its CarePanel technology to collect and integrate the hospital’s GE Dinamap® vital signs monitors’ data from medical surgical areas – into eCHART. This will be accomplished by wirelessly transmitting the vital sign data across the hospital’s existing wireless network using positive patient identification.
  3. Digital Cardiac Reports – Digitizes cardiac rhythm strips and alarm documentation across the clinical enterprise and integrates into EMR. Makes cardiac monitor reports available in the EMR for clinician review, while eliminating the laborious paper documentation process seen in most hospitals today.
  4. Cardiac Monitor Access – Integrates the BedMasterEx client application with the EMR application giving clinicians one-click access to viewing waveforms, vital signs, and alarms captured by patient monitoring systems.

“We are excited and inspired to be expanding our clinical partnership with Erlanger Health System,” said Lance Burton, General Manager of Excel Medical. “The results they’ve derived from our technologies, to date, are just the beginning of great things ahead. This next step is to help them achieve complete ‘Next-Generation Medical Device Integration’ with eCHART across their entire enterprise.” Burton said.
