Goodwill and APS Partner to Help Veterans

Modernizing Medicine Showcases Dermatology-specific Suite

Goodwill of Northern Arizona recently received a grant from Arizona Public Service for $10,000 to be used toward Goodwill’s American Veterans & their Families initiative. These funds will give the program more capacity to provide Veterans with community resources to address disabilities, mental health issues, education and suitable housing that may hinder them from gainful employment.

“This initiative was established to help eliminate barriers to employment and help these Veterans who have served our country get the jobs they want and deserve,” said Liz McGinlay, Vice President of Mission Advancement at Goodwill of Northern Arizona.

For more information about the initiative, please contact Liz McGinlay, vice president, Mission Advancement at Goodwill of Northern Arizona, at liz.mcginlay@goodwillna.org.

New Raising Cane’s donates to BBBS

Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers opened its newest restaurant in Flagstaff on Jan. 22 at 1551 S. Milton Road. The restaurant donated 100 percent of its profits from the day to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Flagstaff.

The new location is expected to bring at least 50 new jobs to the area. Hours of operation for the location are Monday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 12 a.m.

T. Paul Thomas named CEO of NALA

The Northern Arizona Leadership Alliance, a coalition of business, education and nonprofit executives dedicated to addressing the critical needs of the region, has appointed T. Paul Thomas as its new CEO.

Thomas, is the executive in residence at Northern Arizona University’s W.A. Franke College of Business as well as the Chief Entrepreneur of the Business Accelerator at the Northern Arizona Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology.

Thomas succeeds Michael Zervas, whose tenure included overseeing last year’s transformation of the group, formerly known as Flagstaff Forty, into a regional player on par with Greater Phoenix Leadership and the Southern Arizona Leadership Council. Zervas will remain with NALA as an “Emeritus for Life” member in recognition of his service as the group’s first CEO.

Thomas has led both private and public technology-based companies around the globe for almost three decades. As a “serial entrepreneur” he raised more than $130 million in venture capital, handled the sale or acquisition of eight businesses, and been involved in multiple IPO filings. In addition to serving as the Executive in Residence, the 1983 graduate of NAU is also an assistant professor there, teaching courses in international business, entrepreneurship and management.

He also is currently the board chair of the nonprofit Komaza, Inc. in Kenya, which creates sustainable economic opportunities for farmers through “microforestry” — the planting and maintenance of small-scale, income-generating tree farms.

NALA’s three main concerns are the economic vibrancy of the region, environmental stewardship and promoting educational excellence. The group’s initiatives for 2016 will include exploring how northern Arizona can attract more investment capital for the region’s entrepreneurs, as well as continued engagement with the Four Forest Restoration Initiative, or 4FRI, which has faced challenges in its goal of thinning and ecologically restoring about 50,000 acres a year in the Coconino, Kaibab, Apache-Sitgreaves and Tonto national forests.

Northern Arizona Healthcare partners with Cerner

Northern Arizona Healthcare has entered into partnership with Cerner, its health information technology supplier to support the health system’s two acute hospitals and 38 ambulatory facilities.

Cerner, a global leader in health care technology, will displace another cloud-based technology supplier and take responsibility for NAH’s ambulatory clinics’ revenue cycle management through Cerner Business Office Services.

This expanded relationship will also extend Cerner ambulatory EHR and BOS solutions to more than 200 community providers that make up PathfinderHealth, a regional accountable care organization managed by NAH and other local health systems, in an effort to improve quality and efficiency across the region.

Skilled Cerner BOS professionals work directly with patients and external parties to assume tasks such as claims scrubbing and processing, payment posting, self-pay management, insurance follow-up, denial management and patient call center services.
