- Electronic management records products are software packages that allow hospitals and physicians to store and organize medical records on a computer database.
Certification Providers
- There are two EMR certification providers authorized by the Department of Health and Human Services. These are the Certification Commission for Health Information Technology, based in Chicago, Illinois and the Drummond Group, based in Austin, Texas.
Meaningful Use
- For EMR programs to qualify for certification, they must meet meaningful use criteria. This involves a set of 25 objectives, of which at least 20 must be met by the program. Since physicians and hospitals must meet meaningful use criteria to qualify for incentive payments, it is important for all EMR products used by physicians and hospitals to be certified.
