BIO-key International announced today that hospitals across four Americans states have placed initial purchase orders for its biometrics technology. The orders, made by hospitals in New York, Ohio, Kentucky and California, add up to a combined value of $130,000.

According to BIO-key, the initial contracts with these hospitals will represent over $400,000 in revenue for 2015 since full rollouts of the tech are expected to begin before the end of this year’s first quarter.

A company that specializes in fingerprint biometric identification for many facets of the healthcare industry, BIO-key entered this particular vertical market in 2006. Since then, it has made a point of partnering with leading providers of electronic health record (EHR) platform providers. The company’s partners in this respect include Allscripts, Epic, HealthCast and IBM.

Mike DePasquale, chairman and CEO of BIO-key comments: “These hospital deployments are the beginning results of our strategic efforts in the North American Healthcare Market, where we enjoy technology mandates, high barriers to competition, a well recognized and respected brand, along with many marquee customers and partners.”

“We’re finding that our hospital customer CIO’s face three primary challenges; security, workflow and compliance” added DePasquale. “We deliver measurable improvements in each area and are seeing a noticeable increase in healthcare demand, measured in both opportunity solicitations and gross monetary value.”

The healthcare market has long been in need of convenient strong authentication to enable easy access of EHR solutions and to bring mobility into the medical workplace. Healthcare practitioners are poor on time and in the medical profession a few seconds can make all the difference. That said, medical records are extremely valuable and need to be protected with the utmost security. With BIO-key making a point to provide convenient and high-grade security for EHR, things are starting to look healthy for biometrics in hospitals and clinics.
