Jan 12 : JTED introduces EHRs to students

bandwagon

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 requires that digital record-keeping be used by public and private healthcare providers. In order to prepare students for the change in record-keeping in the medical field, Mountain Institute JTED has implemented the Electronic Health Record (EHR) Tutor Program.

The program allows students to learn the basic skills needed in a typical EHR system, view electronic patient data, document care and assessments, and make care decisions based on information from the EHR system.

During the fall semester, the students learned how to create health records the old fashioned way, utilizing file folders and manual recording of all the critical patient facts. This semester with the new EHR system, the Medical Professions students are entering health information into the system data base.

Aubrey Toler, a Medical Professions student attending Chino Valley High School, said, “The new EHR system helps a lot with legibility of the records. People have a hard time reading other people’s handwriting, and this system puts the information in text for improved accuracy.”

Sable Padilla and Hunter Stewart-Koberstein, also of Chino Valley High School, adds, “MIJTED’s new EHR program allows us to get familiar with the actual EHR system we’ll encounter in the health-care field, and it also helps to keep us organized. We can make mistakes and correct them on fictitious patients, which is great experience for our future professions.”

Ivy Andersen, attending from Tri-City Prep, commented, “The EHR program will help health care providers be more organized, and the chance of losing records will decrease with each person’s file being transferable from one location or physician to another.”

Cynthia Moreno, attending from Aspire, sums up: “Using EHR in class is letting me become familiar with a program that I will be using in my career as a Nurse Practitioner.”

MIJTED’s Medical Professions students are learning the healthcare field and how important it is to meet the needs of each patient. The EHR Tutor allows them to learn one more skill that will be critical in their chosen field.
