Healthcare Hospitals

Saint Josephs Hospital-Medical Center

St. Joseph’s is a nationally recognized center for quality tertiary care, medical education and research. It includes the internationally renowned Barrow Neurological Institute®, the Norton Thoracic Institute, Center for Women’s Health, University of Arizona Cancer Center at St. Joseph’s, and a Level I Trauma Center verified by the American College of Surgeons. The hospital is also a respected center for orthopedics, internal medicine, primary care and many other medical services. U.S. News & World Report routinely ranks St. Joseph’s among the top hospitals in the United States for neurology and neurosurgery.

Founded in 1895 by the Sisters of Mercy, St. Joseph’s was the first hospital in the Phoenix area. The hospital is part of Dignity Health, one of the largest healthcare systems in the West with more than 40 hospitals in Arizona, California and Nevada.

Dignity Health is one of the largest health systems in the nation, with more than 400 care centers, including 41 hospitals, urgent and occupational care, imaging and surgery centers, home health, and primary care clinics in 22 states. Headquartered in San Francisco, Dignity Health is dedicated to providing compassionate, high-quality, and affordable patient-centered care with special attention to the poor and underserved. We strive to provide high-quality, affordable health care with compassion and humankindness to improve the health of all communities we serve. Our goal is to create healing environments that meet the physical, mental, and spiritual needs of all we serve.

Our story began in Dublin, Ireland when the Sisters of Mercy vowed to serve people who suffer from poverty, sickness, and lack of education. In 1854, eight women religious came to San Francisco and immediately began caring for residents of the city, which was stricken by cholera, typhoid, and influenza. A few years later, they founded St. Mary’s Hospital, now the oldest continuously operating hospital in the city, and eventually one facility became many. In 1986, two congregations of the Sisters of Mercy joined their 10 hospitals together, forming Catholic Healthcare West. In 2012, we changed our name to Dignity Health to better describe what we stand for. Dignity is something that everyone is born with. To us, “dignity” means showing respect for all people by providing excellent care and helping them lead healthy, meaningful lives.
