M*Modal Chosen by Adventist Health System for EHR-Integrated Transcription

M*Modal, a leading provider of clinical documentation and Speech Understanding™ solutions, today announced it has been selected by Adventist Health System (AHS), one of the nation’s largest faith-based healthcare organizations, to integrate its transcription and front-end speech recognition system and pilot its computer-assisted physician documentation system in 41 AHS facilities across nine states. This will enable Adventist Health System to improve documentation workflows in both inpatient and ambulatory electronic health records (EHRs), while determining the benefit of utilizing computer-assisted physician documentation (CAPD) to enhance care and report quality in real time. With this multi-facility deployment, M*Modal will provide Adventist Health System with its full suite of unified, speech-driven documentation solutions, enabling clinicians to quickly and accurately create complete and compliant notes from any location directly in their Cerner® and athenahealth® EHR systems.

After an extensive evaluation, M*Modal’s single documentation platform was selected for its in-built clinical intelligence, robust EHR integrations, and low cost of ownership in a distributed IT environment. Equally important to the partnership is M*Modal’s shared-risk, performance-based business model for facilitating the adoption and utilization of its front-end speech recognition technology to support Adventist Health System’s objective of minimizing the cost and delay of transcription.

“M*Modal utilizes a single speech recognition engine for both back-end and front-end speech recognition which should facilitate physician’s adoption of front-end speech recognition, thereby decreasing turnaround time so reports are available promptly for the physicians,” said Brent Snyder, chief information officer for Adventist Health System.

“Adventist Health System is a leader in the healthcare industry and we are proud to serve as a partner to help continuously innovate its clinical documentation operations to support emerging models of care,” said Scott Mackenzie, CEO of M*Modal. “We look forward to achieving our shared goal of advancing the quality of care as well as physician efficiency by delivering a ubiquitous documentation experience with real-time, actionable clinical intelligence. We are pleased to be part of Adventist Health System’s go-forward clinical documentation strategy, along with their EMR partner, to address both current and future documentation needs,” he said.

With this broad implementation of the M*Modal documentation platform, clinicians practicing at Adventist Health System facilities will be provided with:

  • Different speech options, all with the same cloud-hosted user profile which is shared across applications, devices and workflows: real-time front-end speech recognition, mobile speech recognition and back-end dictation/transcription or a personalized blend of these options. This allows physicians to document in any care setting and interchangeably choose the optimal workflow for a consistent experience.
  • A single, cloud-based and secure Speech and Natural Language Understanding platform to consolidate and information enable documentation workflows. M*Modal’s front-end speech recognition solution, Fluency Direct™, will provide automated computer-assisted physician documentation functionality to deliver in-workflow insights to Adventist Health System physicians as they interact with Cerner Dynamic Documentation™ and the athenahealth EHR. To begin with, Adventist Health System will utilize this game-changing, real-time technology to address gaps in documentation quality and variance in patient care, with the goal of delivering increasingly more complex protocols and best practices to physicians when needed most.
  • M*Modal’s ability to expertly blend technology with industry-leading transcription services and documentation processes to meet Adventist Health System at its current state of readiness and need, while laying an advanced technology framework for seamless growth and innovation to meet future documentation goals, enabling physicians to devote more time to patient care.
