Nov 19: Pentagon, VA Work Toward Interoperable EHRs

he departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs have jointly created the VistA Evolution software program that works to help users share electronic health records, Federal News Radio reported Thursday.

Michael O’Connell writes Theresa Cullen, the Veterans Health Administration’s chief medical informatics officer, told the radio station in an interview that the agency wants to integrate messaging standards into the EHR platform.

“The beauty of what the DoD and VA is doing, in my opinion, is that we are at the sharp end of the stick,” Cullen said, according to the report.

“If we figure it out and we figure out how to do that well, efficient, effective, consume that data and integrate, it benefits the entire health IT space,” she added.

Cullen also said the VHA also aims to make the EHR platform more usable for patients and their caretakers, O’Connell writes
