Practice Fusion Releases Free e-Prescribing of Controlled Medications

CoverMyMeds and Practice Fusion Partner

Practice Fusion, the #1 cloud-based electronic health record (EHR) for doctors and patients, today announced that it is now certified for the electronic prescribing of controlled substances (EPCS).  With this certification, Practice Fusion can help ensure that its New York State physicians are able to comply with the Internet System for Tracking Over-Prescribing Act (I-STOP) requirement for EPCS. Easily accessible from a mobile tablet or device, providers can quickly and securely transmit controlled substance prescriptions, further digitizing their office workflow.  With Practice Fusion’s free platform, providers remove the burden of manually writing time-consuming, error-prone, and often stolen paper prescription pads.  An industry leader, Practice Fusion is the only cloud-based platform to provide a free, certified EPCS program to the over 77,000 eligible providers in New York State.

Key Points about EPCS:

  • Enables New York providers to electronically transmit controlled substance medications from their mobile device or tablet in accordance with the I-STOP Act.
  • Practice Fusion is the only free solution available to the over 77,000 eligible New York providers that can help ensure that they become and stay compliant with impending regulations.
  • Replaces time-consuming, and error-prone paper prescriptions by allowing physicians to quickly and securely electronically prescribe new medications and refills.
  • Assists providers in reducing the risk of adverse reactions and preventing prescription drug abuse, overdose, fraud, and doctor shopping.

Currently, effective March 27th, 2016, New York State providers are required to transmit all prescriptions – controlled and non-controlled substances – electronically to pharmacies to help combat overprescribing and doctor-shopping, and to help curtail abuse and illegal diversion of prescriptions without compromising access to controlled substances for legitimate health care purposes.

With competitor startup costs up to $42,232 to implement an electronic prescribing platform, Practice Fusion removes the financial barrier of adoption by offering providers a cost-effective solution that enables them to be compliant and focus on what they do best, treating patients.  By supporting providers’ compliance with New York State law, Practice Fusion’s robust electronic prescribing platform can aid physicians in improving patient outcomes by helping to reduce the risk of adverse reactions and giving them the necessary tools to help in preventing prescription drug abuse, overdose, fraud, and doctor shopping.

“With competitors levying a financial burden up to $2,500 per provider yearly, Practice Fusion is the only cloud-based platform uniquely aligned to serve New York providers with an accessible, certified EPCS solution,” said Ryan Howard, Founder and CEO, Practice Fusion. “By providing EPCS at no cost, we are taking another step to digitize health care and to help provide safer prescriptions for 19 million New York State residents.”
