Prime Healthcare Services announced today that six of its hospitals were recognized among Truven Health 100 Top Hospitals®, based on quality of care and patient satisfaction. Truven Health is a leading provider of information and solutions to improve the quality of healthcare.

Prime Healthcare hospitals are committed to providing top quality healthcare, and this unbiased and peer-reviewed study is recognition of our high clinical standards,” said Prem Reddy, MD, FACC, FCCP, Chairman, President and CEO of Prime Healthcare Services. “I congratulate the physicians, nurses and staff at these hospitals for their dedication in meeting the highest standards of quality care in the country. Our goal is to have every Prime Healthcare hospital achieve this excellence.”

The Truven Health Analytics “100 Top Hospitals” award winners for Prime Healthcare were: Centinela Hospital Medical Center (fourth time), Chino Valley Medical Center (fourth time), Desert Valley Hospital (sixth time) Garden Grove Hospital Medical Center (fourth time), Paradise Valley Hospital (second time) and Shasta Regional Medical Center (third time). Six of the nine California community hospitals that earned this distinction were Prime Healthcare hospitals. Prime Healthcare hospitals have earned this recognition 33 times.

Every Prime hospital that earned the award this year was acquired while under severe financial distress. Centinela Hospital Medical Center was on the verge of bankruptcy in 2007, in a neighborhood where four other hospitals, including Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center, closed. It sees more uninsured and underinsured patients compared to any other hospital in the area. Chino Valley Medical Center was acquired in bankruptcy in 2005, needing enormous investment in upgrading its infrastructure. Desert Valley Hospital was in imminent bankruptcy under Phycor, which later declared bankruptcy, and saved after it was acquired in 2001. Garden Grove Hospital Medical Center was in financial distress under Tenet Healthcare at the time of its acquisition in 2008. Paradise Valley Hospital, a founding hospital of Adventist Health System, was scheduled to be closed if not for Prime’s rescue in 2007. Shasta Regional Medical Center was scheduled to be closed in less than a week before Prime saved it in 2008.

According to Truven Health Analytics, award winners demonstrate that high-quality patient outcomes can be achieved while improving efficiency. “If all hospitals across the nation performed at the same level as the “100 Top Hospitals” award winners:

  • Nearly 126,500 additional lives could be saved.
  • Nearly 109,000 additional patients could be complication-free.
  • $1.8 billion in inpatient costs could be saved.
  • The typical patient could be released from the hospital half a day sooner.
  • Episode-of-illness expense would be 2 percent lower than the peer median.

*If the same standards were applied to all inpatients, the impact would be even greater.

“This year’s 100 Top Hospitals represent the highest national standards in hospital care and management today. They set the benchmarks for peers around the country to follow — consistently delivering outstanding quality of care, satisfaction and community value at a reasonable cost,” said Jean Chenoweth, senior vice president for performance improvement and the 100 Top Hospitals program at Truven Health Analytics. “The majority of the 2015 award winners have produced year-to-year performance improvement, as well. This speaks to the consistent focus on excellence by the entire organization and the men and women who serve patients.”

The Truven Health 100 Top Hospitals® is the most comprehensive, rigorous study of its kind, incorporating public data; proprietary, risk-adjusted and peer-reviewed methodologies; and key performance metrics to arrive at an objective balanced scorecard measuring current performance and long-term improvement. It evaluates performance in 11 areas: mortality; medical complications; patient safety; average patient stay; expenses; profitability; patient satisfaction; adherence to clinical standards of care; and post-discharge mortality and readmission rates for acute myocardial infarction (heart attack), heart failure, pneumonia; and new for this year, Medicare Spend per Beneficiary (MedicareSpend). The addition of Medicare Spend leverages CMS data to evaluate the cost incurred for an episode of care across settings pre- and post-discharge for Medicare patients. The study has been conducted annually since 1993.

To conduct the 100 Top Hospitals study, Truven Health researchers evaluated 3,000 short-term, acute care, non-federal hospitals. They used public information — Medicare cost reports, Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) data, and core measures and patient satisfaction data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Compare website. Hospitals do not apply, and winners do not pay to market this honor. Prime Healthcare continues to be committed to excellence in patient care and this recognition reflects that commitment.

Prime Healthcare Services

Prime Healthcare is an award-winning national hospital system with 34 acute-care hospitals providing more than 35,000 jobs in 11 states. Based in California and one of the largest hospital systems in the country, Prime Healthcare is committed to ensuring access to quality healthcare. It has been recognized as among the “100 Top Hospitals” in the nation 33 times and among the “15 Top Health Systems” three times, and is the only “10 Top Health System” west of the Mississippi. Our hospitals have been recognized by The Joint Commission among the “Top Performers on Key Quality Measures” in 2014.

Prime Healthcare is dedicated to serving our patients and communities. Since 2010, our hospitals have provided more than $2 billion in charity and uncompensated care. We provide more charity care than any other hospital system in California (excluding public hospitals) and nearly double the state average. About the Truven Health 100 Top Hospitals® Program

Since 1993, the Truven Health 100 Top Hospitals program has used independent and objective research to guide hospital and health system performance. Organizations do not apply or pay for this honor, or pay to promote their award. Award-winning hospitals and health systems prove that better care is possible and provide an example for other organizations to follow across the industry. The 100 Top Hospitals award winners demonstrate top performance on both how patients are cared for through clinical measures and how the hospital performs as an efficient business. 100 Top Hospitals is a registered trademark of Truven Health Analytics.
