Thinking Outside the Box About Mental Health

Thinking Outside the Box About Mental Health

Mental health affects everyone. No matter who you are, where you work, or where you live, staying healthy mentally should always be a priority. Unfortunately, it can be easy to run out of ideas when it comes to boosting mental health. There are things like therapy and medication, but what do you do when those aren’t enough?

Practicing Meditation

One thing that has helped people for centuries is meditation. Historically, meditation was used by monks to connect to their deities and attain enlightenment. Nowadays, it is mainly used to calm the mind and allow peace and comfort to rule over the body. Many people will use it in conjunction with their own spiritual practices, but it is not strictly reserved for spirituality. Meditation is a very personal thing, and will often take some practice to figure out what works best for you.

The main focus of meditation is calmness. Again, it depends on what works best for you, but there are a few main ideas that might help. Grab some comfortable clothes and sit somewhere quiet where you won’t be disturbed. As you settle into your chosen position, focus on your breathwork. Take deep, slow breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth. As you feel your body start to relax, let your thoughts go. Meditation isn’t about forcing yourself not to think, but rather not being a slave to your thoughts. Just let them run as you keep breathing, not taking the time to focus on any of them. Let your mind and body relax for as long as you want, and then enjoy the calm that follows when you’re done.

Learning Journaling

Another easy way to improve your mental health is through journaling. Like meditation, this is tailored to your specific interests and tastes. You can pick up a guided journal from a bookstore, find journaling prompts online to start conversations, or just write down what you’re thinking about at the end of every day. Journaling can be as intense or relaxed as you make it. Ultimately, it is up to you and your specific comfort level, but it can be very therapeutic to release some thoughts onto paper.

Another thing journaling is great for is aligning your personality. Everyone has one side that they show to others, the public side, and another that they keep hidden, or the shadow side. The shadow side is where your subconscious actions and feelings come from. Things like your guilt, envy, or trauma all live here. By coming to terms with that shadow self, you can heal from a lot of things in the past, and even create healthier new responses to stress in the present. All it takes is the will to be honest with yourself.

Picking up a Hobby

Sometimes you might want to relax while still getting something accomplished. Finding a hobby you enjoy is a great way to let your brain shut off without resting or meditating. Hobbies can be anything from painting, to crochet, to going to the gym. It all depends on what you enjoy doing. Of course, it can be somewhat daunting trying to find something that helps you relax. One way you can narrow it down is to pick something you already know you’re good at. For example, if you like to doodle, maybe go out and purchase a sketchbook and pencils so you can draw at home.
Another way you can try to find a hobby is by looking at things you’re interested in. If you are curious about how to pick up woodworking, maybe find someone in your area who does it. Most people will be perfectly fine with allowing you to watch them do their craft, you just have to ask. In addition to local artisans, many craft stores do classes for different hobbies like painting, photography, and cake decorating. No matter what your interest is, there are bound to be people who can help you get started.

Taking care of your mental health is so important. Thankfully, little daily actions can greatly improve your mental health. Give it a try!
