Tips to An Efficient Onboarding Process in the Health Industry

onboarding process

Exclusive Article by Dawn Castell at EMRIndustry

Bringing new employees onto your team in the health industry can be a tricky thing to do if you try to rush into it. You need to understand that each healthcare professional is going to have a slightly different approach to working in this field. This is why implementing an efficient onboarding process is a great way to make this whole process go much more smoothly.

Develop a list of frequently asked questions

Chances are that if your organization has been around for a long period of time, you are going to have had many questions that get asked on a frequent basis. It is important to remember these frequently asked questions and develop a list. When you have a list of frequently asked questions, you can go over this list with your new employee. This will most likely knock out a lot of the confusion that they might have been originally feeling about their new position. There may also be frequently asked questions that come from your patients. Your new employee will need to know how to answer these questions quickly, effectively, and politely.

Create captivating goals

Without captivating goals, it is going to be difficult for an employee to feel motivated in their new position. With the use of an onboarding guide, you can create captivating short and long term goals that will continue to push your new employees to all new heights. Actually writing these goals down digitally or on a whiteboard is a great way to make the goals appear more real. Getting these goals to stick with your employee is one of the most important parts of the process. Make sure that the goals you are setting with your employee are mostly coming from within themselves. Internal motivation is always going to be more powerful than any type of external motivation.

Have one-on-one meetings with your new employee

Bringing a new employee onto your team requires a great deal of one-on-one time with this new team member. Setting up meetings where your employees can voice their concerns and you can let them know how they are doing is a great way to bring them more smoothly into your healthcare organization. Make sure that you aren’t just criticizing your employee during these meetings. You need to praise them for the success that they have accomplished at your organization so far. You can also use these meetings to answer any in depth questions that may not have already been answered.

Help your new healthcare employees learn how to interact better with patients

One of the most important parts of having a successful healthcare organization is how your employees interact with your patients. You need to have a strong code of conduct when it comes to employee patient relations. Make sure that you are spending the proper amount of time getting your team geared up for success with patient relations. Bedside manner is something that can really go a long way when it comes to the overall success of your healthcare organization.

Create a playbook that you can always look back on

When you have a great employee playbook that you can look back on, questions can be answered quickly and problems can be solved in virtually no time at all. Creating this playbook can take a great amount of time, but it is a time investment that will pay off for years to come. Work with your most senior employees to create a game plan that will cover all of the odds and ends that come up when running your specific healthcare organization.

While bringing a new employee into your healthcare organization can be a tricky thing to do, they can be successfully integrated with the right onboarding process. Remember, patience is key when trying to have an employee turn into a key player on your team. The more one-on-one time you can spend with your new employee, the easier the onboarding process will be.
