Top Side Hustles for Health Care Workers

Being a health care worker is a demanding and rewarding occupation. However, many seek part-time jobs or other ways to make money outside of their regular hours. This is called a side hustle, and health care workers seek them out for many different reasons. Some need extra money to pay off their student loans, while others just appreciate the opportunity to do something that doesn’t involve life-and-death decisions. If you are a health care worker looking for a side hustle, here are a few possible options. While most make use of your medical knowledge, not all of them do.

Small Business

It might be that you have a hobby or interest outside of work that could earn you some profit. If so, you might want to think about starting a small business that allows you to make money doing the things you do for fun anyway. For example, if you make arts and crafts, you might be able to sell them online, and with dropshipping software, you can send them out to buyers all over the country quickly and efficiently.

Medical Writing and Editing

As a health care worker, you are already familiar with clinical literature that updates you on the latest research and best practices in the medical field. You are probably also familiar with patient education, which provides information about diagnoses presented in a way that laypeople can understand. Both types of literature need to be created by someone with medical knowledge, verified, and updated periodically. If you have a gift for language, you could lend your expertise to medical writing. If content creation isn’t for you, you may be better suited for medical editing or peer review of literature that is pending publication. This helps to make sure that the literature is both accurate and understandable.

As a health care worker, you know that being part of a professional organization lends you credibility and also offers its own advantages. While your present organization membership may open a lot of doors already, you may also become part of the American Medical Writers Association. As an AMWA member, you can get help finding medical writing jobs and access to resources about becoming a better writer.

Training and Teaching

With all the knowledge you have gained in your career, you may be in a good position to teach or train others, who in turn can benefit from your experience. Local colleges in your area may offer certificate or degree programs in health professions. There may be opportunities to provide either online or in-person instruction, and you may be able to choose a part-time schedule to accommodate your clinical work.

If classroom instruction doesn’t sound like a sustainable side hustle, there are many other opportunities to get involved in teaching and training. For example, you may serve as a rater or a field examiner who oversees practical examinations or make yourself available as a guest speaker.

It may be that you have expertise in something other than the medical profession. Depending on what it is, it may also be possible for you to make money teaching other people any other skills you possess. This may be another opportunity to earn profit from your hobbies.

Pharmaceutical Research

Pharmaceutical companies are always looking for medical professionals to assist in the research and development of new medications. Before you can take a job like this, you will have to check what the rules say about conflicts of interest in your primary job, or you could risk losing it. However, if the rules allow it, there are both clinical and nonclinical positions available for physicians and nurses in pharmaceutical research. Examples include medical directors, regulatory work, medical science liaisons, clinical research associates, and board members.
It may be possible to apply your medical knowledge and training in a new way to make more money. In the process, you may gain more professional satisfaction. However, don’t discount other skills you may possess which you may also be able to parlay into a thriving side hustle.
