Coastal Plains Community Center

The Coastal Plains Community Center was originally formed in 1996 by merging  the community Mental Health and Mental Retardation services of three existing organizations—Rio Grande State Center, San Antonio State Hospital, and the Corpus Christi State School.  This merger created Coastal Plain State-Operated Community Services (CPSOCS).

On September 1 of 1999 we became Coastal Plains Community MHMR Center (CPMHMR) as a part of a state-wide change to consolidate services under local governments.  In 2011 our name was changed to Coastal Plains Community Center to reflect a growing movement to replace the term “mentally retardation” with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Coastal Plains Community Center is located in the coastal bend region of South Texas that spans 8,817 square miles of land along the southern part of the Gulf of Mexico.  The Center serves a large, sparsely populated rural area (239,761 people) that includes the following nine counties: Aransas, Bee, Brooks, Duval, Jim Wells, Kenedy, Kleberg, Live Oak and San Patricio.  The Center currently operates under the guidance and direction of a nine member Board of Trustees.  Each of the nine counties served by Coastal Plains is represented by one board member.

The Center operates with a budget of $14,760,809 and serves approximately

3,400 Adults with severe and persistent mental illnesses, 1,000 Youths with serious emotional, behavioral or mental health disorders, and 450 intellectually developmentally delayed persons a year.

Coastal Plains’ headquarters is located at 200 Marriott Drive, Portland, Texas  78374. Our phone number is 361-777-3991 or 888-819-5312 (toll free).  You may reach our Crisis Hotline at 1-800-841-6467.
