Mark Twain Behavioral Health

Mark Twain Behavioral Health (MTBH) is a private, not-for-profit community mental health center serving the citizens of northeast Missouri since 1975. MTBH is governed by a volunteer board of directors located throughout the nine-county service area, which includes the counties of Adair, Clark, Knox, Lewis, Macon, Marion, Schuyler, Scotland, and Shelby.

MTBH opened in Hannibal, Missouri, on February 1, 1975, with funding through federal grant dollars. A full-time office was established in Kirksville with satellite offices to be developed in the Macon and Memphis communities. The federal funding changed in 1981 when contracts were established with the Missouri Department of Mental Health. This allowed for an array of affordable behavioral health services to be offered to the service area. Since that time MTBH has served as the Administrative Agent for the Department of Mental Health in Service Area 14.

Today, MTBH offers a variety of behavioral health services for children, adults, and families who are experiencing difficulties with life issues. Specialized services are available through MTBH’s Community Psychiatric Rehabilitation Program for individuals experiencing a severe, disabling mental illness. A psycho-social program has been developed in Hannibal and Kirksville to assist with this rehabilitation program.

Children’s behavioral health services are available in the home, school, and office. MTBH has a 24-hour crisis intervention system with a mobile response capability as needed. An intensive in-home service is available to families coping with a seriously emotionally disturbed child. Office hours are available for psychiatric evaluations and medication services along with a variety of education programs provided to community agencies/schools throughout the nine-county area.
