Finding a Flexible, Physical Therapy-friendly EHR

physical therapy
One powerful EHR

After spending years using a hodgepodge of unsatisfying medical record systems, Accelerated Rehabilitation Centers wanted to consolidate to one, proven electronic health record (EHR). As Eric Deister, the organization’s vice president of information technology explains: “We needed one powerful EHR system to collect better documentation, to store it electronically, and to use it to improve outcomes.” “We also wanted an adaptable solution to help us stay up to date with changing insurance requirements,” said Sarah Jensen, chief clinical officer (CCO) and physical therapist (PT).A good fit for therapists

After a comparison of potential vendors, Deister reached out to several EHR companies, but none seemed a good fit for his unique physical and occupational therapy needs. What appeared to be a dead end turned into a highway when one of the original EHR vendor candidates recommended NextGen Healthcare for Deister’s therapy-focused requirements.

Improved workflow, flexible solution

After discovering the flexibility of its EHR, the practice partnered with NextGen Healthcare. “We needed a fully tailored system, one that allowed us to create our own therapy-friendly templates. Using personalized EHR content, we’re now streamlining workflow, enhancing efficiencies, and improving patient care. In addition, our NextGen solution enables us to maintain an impressive patient volume without burdening the therapist with cumbersome documentation requirements,” says Deister. Better data, better outcomes Accelerated Rehabilitation Centers’ NextGen® system enables better outcomes reporting, which will have a lasting, positive effect on the practice. “Our main source of business is physician and insurer referrals. Now we have data to show how our care can quickly and cost-effectively improve patients’ health,” says Deister.
Strength in numbers
When negotiating insurance contracts, having proof of outcomes helps justify care costs. From a self-improvement standpoint, the practice can observe why one provider may be getting better outcomes than his or her peers, and then leverage that data for training and mentoring.
Proof in the results
Since implementing the NextGen® solution, Accelerated Rehabilitation Centers is seeing clinical and administrative improvements. As Deister reports, “Our therapists find the system easy to use. They are better able to achieve clinical goals because the templates match their workflow. Administratively, the NextGen system prompts staff to perform crucial tasks, helps us to produce cleaner claims, and keeps us on task.”Proven outcomes help growthNow that the practice is using one consolidated system, it is in a great position to succeed. The team is excited to leverage proven outcomes for real, ongoing growth. Recent graduates expect a robust, solid EHR system, so NextGen Healthcare is helping with recruiting. “Partnering with NextGen Healthcare and their robust EHR, practice management solution , and data exchange was the right move for Accelerated as it provides us with a stable, scalable, and sound integrated platform for continued growth,” concludes Eric C. Warner, CEO, PT.
